BOOKS ON CLOTH is a catalog of hard-to-find and out-of-print books on costume, textiles, needle-arts and related subjects. Through contacts in many countries, Fred Struthers continually acquires a fascinating inventory of books on costume, costume history, costume textbooks, tailoring, needlework, folk art, etiquette and conduct books. Faithful customers in libraries, costume shops and ateliers, and individuals from many disciplines look forward to the catalog twice annually for unusual and much sought-after titles unavailable anywhere else in one place (and an entertaining read in itself). Fred Struthers learned the bookselling business from R.L. Shep and continues to work closely with him in the publishing business, distributing all R.L. Shep Publications to customers the world over.
Fred Struthers makes his home in the
countryside north of Fort Bragg, a town with a diverse population
of 5,000, on the North Coast of California 3 1/2 hours from San
Francisco. Fort Bragg is the destination, north of the village of
Mendocino, for many thousands of travellers from all over the
world, attracted to the natural and unspoiled scenic beauty of
the area. Fred Struthers was an abstract painter for twenty
years, having studied at the Kansas City Art Institute in the
early 1970s. He served an apprenticeship with the renowned
painter, William Schwedler, in New York City. His experience as
an artist has served him well in his present occupation as a
bookseller of costume and textile books, and as an avid gardener
on two acres in a gardener's paradise.
